Meet Lucid

What is Lucid Counseling?

Life Uplifting for Chronic Illness and Disability (LUCID) Counseling Chicago was founded by Dylan Saks in Summer 2023. Lucid’s mission is to foster a space where people feel understood and embraced, instead of met with stigma, shame and feelings of loneliness. Lucid is about feeling seen enough to not only feel uplifted, but back in control of our experience. Lucid values come from my experience of being treated, and seeing people in pain treated, in pathologizing, depersonalized, clinical ways. Whether it is a chronic illness, depression or just feeling misunderstood, we want to provide a space where people can build community, safety, health and worth.

Our values…

Equity- equity is different from equality. It does not prioritize sameness, but instead celebrates differences by noticing that everyone starts life with different challenges and strengths. Honoring those differences creates a feeling of fairness for all involved. Equity starts with the sentiment of “nothing about us without us.”
Compassion - compassion is about searching for an understanding of one’s suffering without occupying it. Compassion is a necessary component of healing exchanges as one can never truly occupy a person’s world without infusing their bias. Compassion allows us to have more moments of expressed empathy and deeper connection.

Our stance…

Humility - humility is defined as a freedom from arrogance. Lucid honors this by acknowledging that equity stems from humility. Humility is about recognizing the privilege that comes with being a therapist and getting to walk along with others as they understand their own experience.
Curiosity- curiosity is a strong desire to learn or know something. Lucid counseling prides itself on being curious about people’s experience, their identities, and their contexts. The world is far too beautiful to not be curious. Curiosity of a person’s experience breeds a sense of compassion, humility and equity.
